Update for April 2011 - Board Meeting and Goings On!

Good afternoon, everyone! I was out sick before, during and after the last Board of Trustees meeting. :)

 

The Board approved the changes to Governing Regulations II, about addressing the Board and the posting of Board agendas. Yea!! Many thanks go to Robynn Pease, Ernie Yanarella and Ryan Smith, who began this effort - Joe Peek, Ryan and I picked up where they left off this summer. This was a great group effort among the student, faculty and staff trustees! I also appreciate the contribution of Pam May, chair of the Board’s University Relations Committee, who suggested simplifying the language in December, which greatly improved the final wording.

 

I have four items on my “to do” list for today’s blog post.

 

1. Staff Senate Elections

The nomination period for election to the Staff Senate has begun! Please visit http://www.uky.edu/Staff/Senate/elect/senate/2011/index.htm for more information on the election. Consider talking with your co-workers and supervisor about running for a position in the Staff Senate. The Staff Senate represents staff employees at the university level and we need a robust Senate membership to do it effecitvely! Feel free to contact a current senator about time commitments, etc. Being a member of the Staff Senate is an excellent way for you and your department to remain abreast of changing policies and benefits, new proposals, etc.

 

2. CRISIS

If a UK employee is having a financial crisis, there is a new resource available. CRISIS, the new UK financial assistance program initiated by the Staff Senate, will assist employees in need by providing a one-time payment of up to $500. CRISIS (Crisis Relief In Situations Involving Staff) is funded by employee contributions, either through a payroll deduction of as little as $5.00 a month (divided if you are paid bi-weekly), or a one-time donation by check. 3. Preferred Presidential Candidate Forums

As you may know by now, there will be forums for staff, faculty and students on Monday, May 2 in order for us to meet the preferred presidential candidate. (That person doesn’t really exist, yet. The Board will meet at the end of April to deliberate on the finalists and choose a preferred candidate). More information will be forthcoming in the near future, but please plan on attending this forum – it will be live streamed, so you can also attend from your desk!

 

On another note, the Staff Senate will be putting out a survey for ALL STAFF to fill out the afternoon of May 2, after the preferred presidential candidate forum for staff. (The survey will close that evening, so you’ll have to be quick!) There will be only five questions, and the intent is to solicit input from as many staff as possible. The survey results will help inform the final Board decision on the preferred candidate.

 

4. UK Remembers

The second annual “UK Remembers” ceremony will take place this Thursday, April 21, from 12:15 – 12:50 pm on the north lawn of the Main Building, Patterson Drive side. (Rain location is Lexmark Room, Main Building.) This is an opportunity for members of the University community to come together and remember the employees, students, retirees, alumni, etc. who have passed away.

 

If you cannot attend in person, you can visit the Work-Life home page (www.uky.edu/HR/WorkLife) and very shortly before the event begins, there will be a link to a video stream of the memorial.
